Jay Allen, The Underrated Person of Blazer Broadcasting

By Gregory Crawford @wchoops

If you ask people around the league and I actually do, many people will tell you that Brian Wheeler is best radio play by play announcer in the NBA. I have heard them all and I agree.

Another key member of that radio broadcast of Portland Trail Blazers is Jay Allen and boy is he underrated.

Knowledge of the entire NBA, always prepared and always enthusiastic are just part of Allen’s professional persona.

I personally first met Jay Allen at the 2003 US Women’s Open at the iconic Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains, Oregon. It was a big time event that drew media from around the world. It was obvious that Allen was not there for great food the USGA provides to the media. Allen was there to do his job, asking great questions to players and being totally prepared to cover a golf major.

Nothing has changed in 2018. As in game sideline reporter for Blazer radio and hosting the pre and post game radio shows on Rip City Radio 620, Allen never misses a beat.

I will leave you with this from a top flight NBA executive that has been involved with the NBA for 43 years.

“Jay Allen would be a star in any NBA market. If you listen to him closely he always gives you information you can learn a lot from. Some broadcasters just show up, Allen shows up loaded with fresh info, without overload. He has a long and bright future in our league”.
