In golf, it is always a hot topic, best player to never win a major? Of course it is Matt Kuchar, but back to hoops.
Best college basketball team never to win the Big Dance. Not even arguably, it is Gonzaga Bulldogs.
22 regaular season championships, 16 WCC tournament championships. Is there a greater regular season record in the history of sports? Logic says no.
A question for all Gonzaga basketball fans, does it bother you with that great regular season record, yet no national championship, having played for one in 2017.
Last night in my hometown the Zags made their annual visit to Rose City and there were no surprises.
They won, the team is loaded with talent, big and little. Ironically I have always felt Portland could challenge Gonzaga for supremacy in WCC, because they play in a great arena, the town is home to many athletic apparel companies and a great academic school. Of course I am wrong, it has never happened and it has not happened with rest of league.
So it begs the question again, does no national title at this point give you hope or disappointment as a Bulldog fan?
One final thought. Every year the sports executive of the year probably should be Mike Roth, Gonzaga athletic director. He has parlayed the Zags hoop success into a cash cow and beyond and quite frankly in addition, put Spokane Washington on the map. He never will get the credit he deserves.
