Teenage Wildcard Shocks Tennis World!

by Harry Cummins

18 year-old Bianca Andreescu capped a remarkable run at the BNP Paribas Open Sunday when she stunned former world Number 1 and three-time Grand Slam singles champion Angelique Kerber 6-4,3-6,6-4 to become the first ever wildcard entry to capture the championship at Indian Wells.

The upstart Canadian teenager was ranked outside the world's top 150 at the end of last season, but now stands to move into the top 25 as a result of a week-long string of shocking upsets over highly ranked players Dominika Cibulkova, Elina Svitolina and Garbine Muguruza.

Andreescu is hoping to follow in the footsteps of Naomi Osaka, who won at Indian Wells last year as an unseeded 20 year-old and used that surprise victory as a springboard to titles at both the U.S. and Australian Open and an eventual Number 1 world-ranking.
